UMED hosts a national conference on energy advice, ‘green’ investments and healthy surroundings

Together for sustainable development

Medical University of Lodz and Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Lodz joined forces again to promote the idea of sustainable development.

On 6-7 March, 2019 MUL Campus turned into a centre of the nation-wide discussion on renewable energy sources, energy counselling and the impact of the environment on human health. Over 150 participants who represented colleges and universities, local authorities and private sector took part in in the first conference entitled We are constructing Green Campus. ‘The aim of the National and Regional Funds for Environmental Protection and Water Management is to provide both substantial and financial support to the investments which improve the environment condition and facilitate sustainable management of the natural resources. It should be emphasized that pro-ecological solutions are often cost-intensive and cost-effectiveness of such investments must often be considered in a long-term perspective. It’s our task to mitigate such issues so that the eco- and human-friendly investments could be implemented effectively and promptly by the largest possible number of entities. In particular, it concerns the support for the beneficiaries whose own resources are not sufficient enough for such investments or the profitability doesn’t ensure sufficiently quick pay-back’, says Wojciech Miedzianowski, President of  Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Lodz.

Universities of Lodz join forces

The event also involved a symbolic declaration of cooperation to implement pro-ecological solutions signed by Lodz universities (Technical University of Lodz, Lodz University and Medical University of Lodz).  It is the first initiative of the kind in Poland and it intends to use the potential of universities in pro-ecological education of academic communities.

Sustainable development has a broad meaning which is often used as a phrase in university  strategies of development.  For several years now Medical University of Lodz has been working to give the phrase its due meaning. EcoUMED, a pro-ecological programme in MUL sustainable development,  is one of the ensuing initiatives. We have taken up the challenge to build the university model based on intelligent management of construction investments  and promotion of pro-ecological attitudes with CKD Campus being our testing ground,  explains Jacek Grabowski, the Chancellor of Medical University of Lodz.

We begin with exchange of knowledge and good practices

The first of the series of eco-conferences dealt with the following themes:

  • promotion of sustainable development on the example of universities: good practices and model innovations,
  • support provided within the framework of ‘National advisory system for public sector, housing business and entrepreneurs on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources’,
  • smog prevention by systemic solutions and raised awareness of air quality impact on human health.
  • Lectures given by Polish and overseas speakers were followed by panel discussions.
